  • Volunteers must be 18+ to join this program. Volunteers interested in joining who are below 18 can apply if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Volunteers should speak fluent English.
  • Volunteers should have a genuine interest in women’s empowerment, community development, and a willingness to learn from and collaborate with local community members.
  • Previous experience in relevant fields (e.g., teaching, social work, business, health, gender studies, agriculture) is a plus, but not a requirement.

The entire volunteer experience for this program will be based in Alego Usonga, a sub-county within Siaya County, Kenya. This rural region offers an authentic glimpse into Kenyan village life, agricultural practices, and strong community bonds. Your volunteer work and cultural immersion activities will take place within Alego Usonga and its immediate surroundings, allowing for a deep understanding of the local context and the specific needs of the women you will be working with.

  • Arrival and Orientation in Kenya: Upon your arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, you will be picked up and transferred to a local transport hub for your onward journey to Alego Usonga (or directly transferred if feasible, depending on logistics). Here, you’ll settle into your welcoming homestay and connect with your host family, who will provide an authentic immersion into Kenyan daily life. Your initial days will include a comprehensive orientation led by our local team, covering Kenyan culture, customs, essential Swahili and Luo phrases, safety guidelines, and an introduction to your specific women’s empowerment projects.
  • Volunteer Activities in Alego Usonga: For the duration of your chosen stay (2-12 weeks), your volunteer work will primarily involve supporting Elimu Centre International’s women’s empowerment initiatives. This may include facilitating training sessions, assisting with income-generating projects, participating in health awareness campaigns, supporting women’s groups within the community, or helping with sustainable farming activities. You will work alongside local staff and community members, directly contributing to the daily operations and goals of these vital programs.
  • Continued Engagement & Cultural Immersion: Beyond your volunteer duties, you will have ample opportunity to explore Alego Usonga and deepen your cultural understanding. Your homestay experience will continue to offer invaluable insights into local life, complemented by visits to local markets, community gatherings, and natural sites within Siaya County.
  • Program Conclusion: At the end of your chosen program duration, you will be assisted with your departure arrangements, leaving with a certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation recognizing your valuable contribution to the women and communities of Alego Usonga, Kenya.

You can choose to explore these options at your leisure. In addition to these optional activities, your program also includes one specific cultural tour/excursion as part of your itinerary.

Accommodation and Wifi

Volunteers will be assigned to stay with a host family in the Alego Usonga area. The accommodation provides volunteers with all basic needs. There is no Wifi provided at the homestay and volunteers can use their own data to access the internet.

Meals

Kenyan cuisine is known for its hearty, flavorful, and diverse dishes, often incorporating fresh local ingredients.

  • Ugali: A staple dish made from maize flour, similar to a stiff porridge, often served with stews or greens.

  • Nyama Choma: Translating to "grilled meat" in Swahili, this is Kenya's unofficial national dish, often goat or beef, seasoned and slow-cooked over coals.
  • Sukuma Wiki: Meaning "to push the week," this is a popular leafy green dish, typically sautéed collard greens or kale with onions and tomatoes.
  • Githeri: A nutritious mix of boiled maize (corn) and beans, often stewed with vegetables and spices.
    Pilau: A fragrant rice dish, often cooked with meat (beef or chicken) and aromatic spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and cumin.
