By serving as a volunteer at Wamwanga Primary School, you will make a significant impact through education, mentorship, and cultural exchange. This rural community, like many underserved regions, faces challenges such as limited educational resources, teacher shortages, and economic hardships. Many rural schools face teacher shortages, resulting in larger class sizes and less individualized attention. Your presence will help address these challenges, giving students more personalized support. Volunteers are highly valued in the community as they can help the organization complete these important tasks and improve the quality of community education.

Please note, this program is not available during school holidays. If you apply for this program during school holidays, we can place you into another active program during your desired time slot.

In Kenya, English is a key language for education and employment opportunities, yet students in rural areas such as Rusinga Island often struggle due to a lack of exposure. As a teacher, you can improve language literacy through reading, writing, and conversational practice. You can also help students understand subjects taught in English more effectively as stronger English skills open doors for future education and employment opportunities.

In Rusinga Island, many schools lack programs for arts, sports, or life skills. As a volunteer you can organize sports or creative activities (e.g., soccer, music, dance) to develop teamwork, leadership, and creativity.  Teaching life skills, such as hygiene, goal-setting, and critical problem-solving are also vital for personal development.

Through our teaching program, students gain holistic education, developing physically, emotionally, and socially.  Volunteers will also gain personal development skills and professional teaching experience by:

  • Improving educational outcomes for disadvantaged students
  • Learning about Kenya’s education system
  • Developing your communication skills
  • Gaining teaching and outreach experience
  • Immersing yourself in Kenya’s diverse culture
  • Volunteers must be 18+ to join this program. Volunteers who are interested to join below 18 can apply if they are accompanied by a parent of guardian.
  • Volunteers should speak fluent English
  • Volunteers should have an interest in improving the educational outcomes of others
  • Volunteers should display an interest in teaching and learning new skills from the local teachers
  • Volunteers should have a genuine interest in helping others and community development

Rusinga Island is a stunning location in Kenya, located in the eastern part of Lake Victoria, the largest freshwater lake in Africa. Rusinga is part of Homa Bay County and is accessible via road from Mbita town through a causeway. It is renowned for its rich history, cultural heritage, and natural beauty.

Volunteers will need to arrive in Kisumu 1 day prior to their assigned orientation day. After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at Kisumu International Airport (KIA). If you are traveling by bus to Kisumu, you can book your tickets to arrive at Kisumu Bus Terminus. Your airport pick-up or bus station pickup is included in your Program Fee. When you arrive at the airport or bus station, a member of the Volunteer to the World staff will be there greet you. From your point of arrival, you will be brought to your temporary homestay or hotel in Kisumu. Your accommodation is covered by your Program Fee and includes the night before your program orientation. Orientation is hosted by our local team in Kisumu on the morning of your chosen start date and covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Kenya – an introduction to Kenya, Kenyan customs, language training details, rules and expectations, safety, travel opportunities in Kenya, and an introduction to your project and placement. Highlights

  • Are you interested in providing educational opportunities to an eager and knowledge hungry community? Volunteer To The World’s Teaching project, enables volunteers to help teach students in areas such as language education, physical and health education, music & art, agriculture, and tutoring in disadvantaged communities. In the Rusinga Island community, education is slowly becoming more accessible for students, however, access to equal education opportunities are limited. Our partners at the Wamwanga Primary School want their students to have exposure to learning about different skills and cultures around the world. Through our English teaching program, volunteers gain experience in teaching and transforming the minds of young learners.

Accommodation and Wifi

Volunteers will be assigned to stay with a host family within walking distance from the Wamwanga Primary School.  Life on Rusinga Island is peaceful and connected to nature, but it may differ from urban or Western living standards:

  • Housing: Homes may be modest with basic amenities. Some families live in houses with traditional materials, while others may have modern structures.
  • Facilities: Access to electricity and running water may be limited. Showers may involve bucket baths, and toilets might be pit latrines. Wifi may not be available at the homestay, however cellular network is available within the area. This is a chance to adapt and appreciate simpler ways of living.

Staying with a host family allows you to embrace a slower, more mindful lifestyle.

Meals

The wide range of Kenyan tribes, ethnicities and cultures are reflected in the diversity of the local cuisine. Volunteers are provided with three meals a day which are served at the accommodation and tend to be rich in carbohydrates.

Dinner typically includes traditional food, such as ugali; a cornmeal porridge, mboga; a vegetable dish, irio; mashed potatoes with peas and corn, meat and vegetables.

Tap water is not safe to drink in Kenya, though bottled water is readily available. Volunteers typically drink around half a gallon, or two liters per day, which costs around US$15 a week. If you have any special dietary requirements, please make a note on your application so arrangements can be made. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available for this program.  However, it is important that volunteers should not expect to eat as they normally do at home.
