Become a Tutor at SA Children’s Home in Cape Town, South Africa

SA Children’s Home is currently home to over 44 kids from underprivileged areas of South Africa.  International volunteers are valued at the center, as they can share their teaching skills, language, culture, and positive ideas.  Volunteer tutors will be assisting secondary students with a focus on the areas of  Maths and Sciences outside of their regular classroom hours.  As the students at SA Children’s Home are all coming from different circumstances, their education journeys may not all be the same.  Having additional tutoring in the major subjects can help them to gain confidence in studying with their peers. There is a great interest from the students to communicate with volunteers from around the world as they can gain new insights and exposure. 

Please note, this program is not available during school holidays.  If you apply for this program during school holidays, we can place you into another active program during your desired time slot.

When you volunteer with our tutoring program, you not only help students from disadvantaged communities gain access to equal education, you also gain personal development skills and have the opportunity to share your knowledge with others by:

• Volunteers must be 25+ to join this program
• Volunteers holding a bachelor’s degree in their desired subject of tutoring is preferred
• Volunteers should speak fluent English
• Volunteers should display an interest in teaching and learning new skills
• Volunteers should have a genuine interest in helping others gain confidence in learning

Cape Town, South Africa, is a stunning coastal city known for its dramatic natural beauty and vibrant culture. It sits at the southern tip of the African continent, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the rugged coastline. One of its most iconic features is Table Mountain, a flat-topped mountain that dominates the skyline and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the ocean.
The city’s harbor is a bustling area with a rich history, and the V&A Waterfront is a popular destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Cape Town is also known for its diverse neighborhoods, each with its own character, from the colorful houses of Bo-Kaap to the trendy cafes and boutiques of the City Bowl.
The city’s diverse population contributes to a vibrant mix of cultures, languages, and cuisines, making it a dynamic and exciting place to explore.

Volunteers will need to arrive in Cape Town 1 day prior to their assigned orientation day. 

After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at Cape Town International Airport (CPT).  Your airport pick-up is included in your Program Fee.

When you arrive at the airport, a member of the Volunteer to the World staff will be there to greet you.  From your point of arrival, you will be brought to your homestay or hostel in Cape Town.  Your accommodation is covered by your Program Fee and includes the night before your program orientation.

Orientation is hosted by our local team in Cape Town on the morning of your chosen start date and covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in South Africa – an introduction to South Africa, South African customs, language training details, rules and expectations, safety, travel opportunities in South Africa, and an introduction to your project and placement. Once your orientation is complete, you’ll be ready to begin your volunteer tutoring mission!
