Are you interested in helping communities in Uganda receive access to quality education, improve nutrition, and develop practical skills? This program also offers opportunities to engage in women’s empowerment initiatives. Volunteer To The World’s program offers the enriching experience of connecting with local communities while serving those in need, including through initiatives in nutrition and skilling. This well-rounded program will give volunteers the experience of participating in many layers of Uganda’s social needs and culture through travel, all within the dynamic setting of Kampala or Wakiso.

  • Directly Assisting Students: By helping teachers, tutoring, and leading activities, you can provide individualized attention and support that may not always be possible in overcrowded classrooms. This can improve students’ learning outcomes and boost their confidence.
  • Cultural Exchange: Your interactions with students and teachers foster cross-cultural understanding and expose them to different perspectives. This can broaden their worldview and promote tolerance.
  • Empowering Communities: By contributing to education and community activities, you help empower communities to take control of their development, freeing up time and creating new opportunities for people to focus on learning, economic activities, and other priorities.
  • Empowering Women: By participating in women’s empowerment projects, you can help foster skills, create opportunities, and support the growth and self-sufficiency of women in vulnerable communities.
  • Promoting Nutrition: By participating in nutrition education and awareness programs, you can help communities improve their dietary habits, leading to better health outcomes, especially for children and vulnerable groups.
  • Facilitating Skilling: Through involvement in vocational training or practical skills workshops, you can empower individuals with new abilities that enhance their employability and economic self-sufficiency. Volunteers are highly valued in the community as they can help the organization achieve their goals and share resourceful tools with the community.

This program offers a chance for our volunteers to step outside their comfort zones and into the heart of Uganda, not as tourists, but as active participants in positive change. Imagine the impact of working alongside dedicated educators, helping to nurture young minds in Kampala or Wakiso, and then rolling up your sleeves to contribute to vital community initiatives, including education, nutrition, skilling, and women’s empowerment, that can change everything. What truly resonates with us is the program’s commitment to authentic cultural exchange. Living with a host family, sharing meals, and learning the rhythms of daily life – these are the moments that forge lasting bonds and break down cultural barriers. It’s about seeing the world through new eyes and realizing that, despite our differences, we’re all connected.

  • Volunteers must be 18+ to join this program. Volunteers who are interested to join below 18 can apply if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Volunteers should speak fluent English.
  • Volunteers should display an interest in teaching and learning new skills from the local teachers.
  • Volunteers should have a genuine interest in helping others and community development.
  • Previous experience in an education related field is a plus, but not a requirement.

The entire volunteer experience for this program will be based in either Kampala or Wakiso, both dynamic areas offering unique insights into Ugandan life. Kampala, the bustling capital city, is known for its vibrant markets, diverse population, and rich cultural heritage. Wakiso District, bordering Kampala, offers a blend of urban and more suburban/rural experiences, providing a glimpse into different community settings. All your volunteer work and cultural immersion activities will take place within your assigned area and its surroundings, allowing for a deep understanding of Ugandan urban or suburban life.

  • Arrival and Orientation in Kampala: Upon your arrival at Entebbe International Airport (EBB), you will be picked up and transferred to your welcoming homestay in either Kampala or Wakiso, as assigned. Here, you’ll settle in and connect with your host family, who will provide an authentic immersion into Ugandan daily life. Your initial days will include a comprehensive orientation led by our local team, covering Ugandan culture, customs, essential language phrases, safety guidelines, and an introduction to your specific volunteer projects.
  • Volunteer Activities in Kampala: For the duration of your chosen stay (2-12 weeks), your volunteer work will primarily involve supporting local schools with educational programs, assisting with nutrition awareness initiatives, facilitating practical skilling workshops, and contributing to women’s empowerment projects within your assigned area (Kampala or Wakiso). You will work alongside local staff and community members, directly contributing to the daily operations and goals of these vital initiatives.
  • Continued Engagement & Cultural Immersion: Beyond your volunteer duties, you will have ample opportunity to explore your assigned area and deepen your cultural understanding. Your homestay experience will continue to offer invaluable insights into local life, complemented by the city’s vibrant markets, historical sites, and social hubs.
  • Program Conclusion: At the end of your chosen program duration, you will return to Kampala and be transferred to the airport for your departure, leaving with a certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation recognizing your valuable contribution to the communities of Uganda.

Beyond your volunteering, Kampala and Wakiso offer a rich array of cultural and recreational activities for your weekends or free time. You can choose to explore these options at your leisure. In addition to these optional activities, your program also includes one specific cultural tour/excursion as part of your itinerary.

Meals
  • Matooke: This is arguably Uganda's most famous dish. Matooke is a type of green banana that's steamed or mashed and served as a starchy staple. It's incredibly versatile and often accompanies stews, sauces, and grilled meats. Think of it as a comforting and filling base for many meals.
  • Posho (Ugali): Made from maize flour, posho is another staple food similar to a stiff porridge. It's typically eaten with the hands and used to scoop up sauces and stews. It's a simple but essential part of the Ugandan diet.
  • Cassava: This root vegetable is widely grown and consumed in Uganda. It can be boiled, roasted, or ground onto flour and used in various dishes.
  • Rice: Rice is becoming a staple food in Uganda especially in urban areas. Uganda grows both upland rice (rain-fed, can grow in drier areas) and paddy rice (swamp/lowland).
  • Rolex: A quick and tasty single-portion meal, perfect for any time of day - breakfast, lunch, supper, or a snack.
    • Chapati: The soft, flatbread that acts as the wrap.
    • Eggs: Usually 2-3 eggs per Rolex, whisked into an omelette.
    • Vegetables: Typically includes chopped tomatoes, onions, and shredded cabbage. Some vendors might also add green peppers, carrots, or fresh coriander.
    • Optional additions: Over time, variations have emerged that include meat (like minced beef or chicken), cheese, avocado, and different spices.
Safety and Support

All volunteers have access to 24/7 in-country support from our local team. All volunteers are encouraged to complete our interactive pre-departure training. All local teams are trained on best practice volunteer management & First Aid.
